1952~2022
Born in Nagaoka City in 1952, Takashi Akiyama graduated from Tama Art University and completed his master’s degree at Tokyo University of the Arts.
He gained international recognition in 1986, winning the Gold Prize at the Warsaw International Poster Biennale for his nature conservation poster "WILD LIFE-HELP." In 1998, he received the United Nations Award for a poster opposing nuclear testing in India. From 2007 to 2013, he won 19 Gold Awards at the Graphis Poster Annual (USA) and numerous other international accolades.
Akiyama has served as a jury member for poster exhibitions worldwide, including in Helsinki, Mexico, and Warsaw. His notable publications include Introduction to Character Communication, Chinese Posters, and Illustration Studies.
Originally built as a bank in the Taisho era, this historic building still exudes
its retro charm nearly 100 years later.
| 1925- | It was built in 1925 (Taisho 14) as the former Nagaoka Commercial Bank. |
|---|---|
| 2009- | On July 11, 2009, it was reopened as the " Akiyama Takashi Poster Museum Nagaoka " (APM), dedicated to the works of Nagaoka-born graphic designer Takashi Akiyama. |
| 2010 | Recipient of the 3rd Nagaoka Urban Landscape Award. |
| 2016 | Designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. |
| 2020- | The museum closed temporarily due to COVID-19, and on January 18, 2022, Takashi Akiyama passed away, leaving behind his deep aspirations for community development. |
| 2022- | The " Akiyama Takashi Poster Museum Nagaoka" and its warehouse, along with the collection of works, were donated to Nagaoka City. This donation honored Takashi Akiyama's wish to contribute to the city, made possible through the generosity of his wife, Harue Akiyama, who resides in Tokyo. |
APM is a historic building that survived wartime fires and the Chuetsu Earthquake. Despite many challenges, Nagaoka has preserved its spirit of beauty, surrounded by the nature of Higashiyama and the Shinano River.
Home to many museums and galleries, the city values art and resilience. APM symbolizes this dedication, passing on Nagaoka’s beauty and strength to future generations.
At the back of the exhibition room, you’ll find our cozy museum café—a space designed for you to unwind and enjoy art at your own pace. We hope this becomes not only a place for appreciation but also a hub for conversation and connection.
You’re welcome to enjoy drinks and snacks right in the exhibition room. Treat yourself to coffee, juice, or our signature green cream soda, inspired by APM’s iconic theme, along with delicious ice cream.
